Tuesday 9th August 2022 - Training: with Scott Hund
Living and Working as a Professional Photographer in Namibia 3 - Wildlife
Scott Hund
Tuesday 9th August 2022, 7:30 pm
Nearing retirement Scott Hurd walked away from his lucrative business as a motivational speaker and, using his own techniques, reinvented himself. He set up a new life in Otjiwarongo, a small town in the African bush - a totally different world - in order to work with his first love, photography.
As a professional photographer in Namibia, Scott never knows what the next phone call will bring. Families, babies and Lodge and Hotel photography are staple to his business but life is different here. He could be training anti-poaching units out in the bush, photographing aged freedom fighters or shooting a President. He could be camped out in the desert doing ID photos of Wild Horses, covering a big tribal wedding or working with rescued pangolins. His knowledge of African wildlife, accumulated over many years, has enabled his images to spearhead major conservation campaigns and be used in documentaries and publications worldwide.
The wildlife was what drew Scott to Namibia in the first place and has always been the icing on a very big cake. This talk draws on some of his most exciting and interesting conservation projects as well as 'chance' encounters in the bush and desert. It gives a wealth of photographic, stalking and editing techniques and looks at the joys, problems and ethics of shooting in an extreme African environment.
Namibia is a land of diversity whose widely varying environments host many different kinds of wildlife, from the desert adapted elephant to the tiny palmetto lizard. Photographing each animal presents different challenges but with observation and learning comes understanding and from that a logical shooting strategy emerges. This simple, underlying principle applies to photographing all animals worldwide. Scott peppers the evening with glimpses of fascinating animal behaviour, all of which help him to dig deeper and find shots that most don't even consider.
Scott's relaxed style allows for questions and comments throughout, in the break or at the end. The talk is suitable for all who have an interest in wildlife photography, beginners and the more experienced, but Zoom talks take him into people's homes and he is aware that he won't just be speaking to photographers, so his aim is to entertain as well as to inform.
